On July 1, 2022, President Joe Biden announced the names of 17 people who will receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor bestowed by the United States. President John F. Kennedy established the award in 1963, and over 647 individuals have received it in the last 69 years.

For those who are unfamiliar with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, it honors individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the security and interests of the United States. Previous recipients have included those who have contributed to world peace or to society through public or private endeavors. While the award is marketed as a civilian honor, it has been given to members of the armed forces on occasion.
The 17 people chosen for the nation’s highest civilian honor in 2022 will be honored at a ceremony at the White House on July 7, 2022, according to a press release from the White House. Three recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2022 will be honored posthumously. Among these people are attorney and labor leader Richard Trumka, veteran and Senator John McCain, and Apple co-founder and former CEO Steve Jobs, who died in 2011.
A recognition 11 years too late?
Jobs, who co-founded Apple Inc., was widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in the world of technology. He was dubbed a visionary for being the driving force behind several products and ideas that have shaped the modern world. Apple’s revolutionary products, such as the iPod, Mac computers, and perhaps his single most important contribution to the world of consumer technology, the iPhone, were created under Jobs’ leadership.

After introducing the first-generation iPhone in 2007, Jobs effectively set the tone for the modern smartphone’s evolution. Even in 2022, more than a decade after his death, modern smartphones are still based on the blueprint and form factor that Jobs created. Needless to say, he has frequently been hailed as the herald of the smartphone revolution, which has directly and indirectly transformed the lives of millions of people worldwide.
