Despite how selfies have become a global practice, Apple remained stingy when it came to its front-facing FaceTime camera. Yeah, it improved the sensor's ability to support the Face ID, which has been the iPhone's only biometry component since the iPhone X, but the camera's usual capabilities haven't seen much action in years. That changed with the iPhone 12 series when Apple finally made 1080p video calls to FaceTime, but it seems to have gently flipped the switch to older iPhones as well.  When it comes to hardware, the iPhone 8 is still capable of 1080p capture, only that it only applies to standard video recordings. However for one reason or another, Apple has limited video calls to 720p HD for years. This may be a compromise between video quality and bandwidth, and may have been OK at a time when video calls were mostly social activities. These days, video calls have become more relevant, and Apple seems to have gotten on the wave as well. Actually, it didn't make a huge deal of noise about it, but it evidently moved FaceTime video calls to the iPhone 12 to 1080p HD instead of 720p on the iPhone 12. Well, that's to be expected for Apple's new and greatest smartphones, but in classic Apple fashion, it's also leveled the playing field with older iPhones.  MacMagazine has discovered that all iPhones going all the way back to iPhone 8 now have this 1080p FaceTime feature. Apple has quietly updated its help pages last month so that no one has really gotten the wind of it so far. The difference in quality between 1080p over Wi-Fi and 720p over 4G was quite noticeable according to the site.  Read more; Why Apple releases iOS 14.2.1 with iPhone 12 mini lock screen fix That said, iPhone 12 owners don't need to feel insulted that this feature doesn't give them special treatment. Currently, they've got one thing all older iPhones don't have. While the iPhone 8 and later support 1080p video calls,

It's getting harder and harder to cheer for Sony's Xperia smartphone. Despite its pedigree, the company has always struggled to bring out devices that remind customers of their place in the history of the mobile market. Although Sony is continuing to support its Open Devices platform for woo developers, its improvements to its already limited number of devices have been relatively slow. The company has reportedly stated when it is moving Android 11 out to its five most recent versions as if to reassure its consumers that it has not forgotten them yet.  Last year there seems to have been a smaller and smaller number of phones run by Sony. Just four, a long way from its smartphone competitors, were released this year by Sony. Since there are so few of them, one would think that Sony would be more easily updated, which is clearly not the case. Xperia Blog notes that the company has shared its plan for updating five of its smartphones from 2019 to the present. That's five out of around nine Sony launched during that time span, which, funnily enough would mean a 50% completion rate. At least when it's going to roll them out.  Read more; Nokia 6300 4G, Nokia 8000 4G to give classic telephones an advanced turn The Android 11 updates will start with Xperia 1 II this December. The report also mentions that this update would add 4K 140 fps of slow motion video recording to the premium phone. January 2021 will see Xperia 5 II and Xperia 10 II get Android 11, while Xperia 1 and Xperia 5 will get theirs in February next year.  Unfortunately, it seems like this is pretty much the end of what Sony can promise, since even Xperia 10 and Xperia 10 Plus are absent from that list. Never mind the mid-range Xperia L series phones that hardly get any attention when they're launched anyway. Given the company's track record, owners are likely to be glad that they will also be able to get fewer updates than just one.
