Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google and its parent company Alphabet, told employees to “be more entrepreneurial” and work with “more hunger” in a staff-wide email warning of consolidation, according to multiple news outlets.

The CEO stated that due to the “uncertain global economic outlook,” Google will slow its hiring pace in the second half of 2022. According to Pichai, Google hired a whopping 10,000 people during the second quarter. According to the CEO of Google, the company will consolidate “where investments overlap” and streamline its processes. Google is effectively telling its employees that they must work harder or else.

In the face of a looming recession, tech companies of all sizes have laid off workers. This includes Google, Microsoft, Tesla, and other corporate behemoths, as well as much smaller companies like Bird, Rivian, and Coinbase. Pichai’s memo made no mention of layoffs, but words like “streamlining” and “consolidating” conjure up images of them.

For its part, Alphabet did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the memo. Its first-quarter net profit fell 8% year on year to $16.44 billion. On July 26, the company will report its second-quarter earnings.
