You can now update your iPhone to the latest iOS 15 for free. The new version includes a bevy of apps, features and toys to keep you entertained. While it may be alluring to dive right in, a wise iPhone user will take a few precautions to ensure that their transition to the new iOS version is as seamless as possible. We’ll give you some advice further down the page.
Before you update to iOS 15…
As soon as a major software update is released, it’s alluring to immediately upgrade to take advantage of all the new features. The wise user, on the other hand, puts off gratification for a little while because not all updates go smoothly.
The public beta of iOS 15 has been available for some time, and real-world users are helping to identify bugs and glitches. As a result, Apple has had a chance to work out the kinks. Even if the final release is deemed ready, that does not mean that all bugs have been squashed.
It makes sense, then, to create a complete backup of your iPhone before installing iOS 15. This way, you can always go back to how your phone was before something catastrophic happens – or you find that a mission-critical app you need isn’t compatible with the latest version yet.
You can back up your iPhone to the cloud if you’re an iCloud subscriber. Depending on your setup, that feature may be enabled by default, which means your iPhone will perform incremental updates in the background. When it comes to setting up iCloud backups, you can do so in iOS by going to Settings > General > Restore from iCloud Backup. To begin, make sure you have enough space in your iCloud account. You should also seek out the fastest WiFi connection possible because transferring all of that data can take some time.
You can also back up your iPhone to your Mac or PC, which is sometimes quicker. The Lightning cable is required, and you can either use Finder on a recent Mac or iCloud on a Windows PC to make an exact copy of your data. When backing up your data, always select the “Encrypt local backup” option so that your passwords and app logins are protected. Updating to iOS 15 is straightforward

Although you can still use a PC or a Mac, you can now update your iPhone’s iOS directly from the device.

That’ll take some time, and the length of time will be determined by the speed of your internet connection. To speed up the download, find the fastest WiFi network nearby, just like you would when performing a backup. There are, of course, a variety of other factors at play.
Apple’s servers are under a lot of stress each year, as we can see. As a result, depending on the speed of your internet connection, it may take much longer than expected to download the new software.
If you don’t mind waiting a few days, or even just a day, the speeds can often be improved significantly. Meanwhile, there’s a case to be made for delaying gratification a little longer in general.
Day 1 iOS 15 updates may not be sensible
The same reason you should make a backup of your iPhone is also valid for delaying and waiting for iOS 15. When a major upgrade like iOS 15 is released, we expect Apple’s servers to be swamped, and that’s exactly what happens when the company releases a minor update like iOS 15.
