The Outer Worlds is coming to Switch sooner than we expected

by George Mensah

In the lead up to the release of The Outer Worlds, developer Obsidian revealed that the game will be coming to Switch. This came as a big surprise to a lot of folks, though in the time since that announcement was made, we haven’t heard much more about the Switch version. That, unfortunately, means that there’s been no talk of a release date.

That all changed during Take-Two’s earnings call with investors for Q2 2020. In it, Take-Two president Karl Slatoff confirmed that The Outer Worlds will be coming to Nintendo Switch in “early 2020.” Polygon reports that the Switch version will be out before the end of Private Division’s current fiscal year, which wraps up on March 31st, 2020.

So, assuming Private Division and Virtuous – which is handling the porting duties on the Switch version – can keep on schedule, The Outer Worlds will be on the Switch soon. While many of us were probably expecting the game to be out at some point in 2020, few of us were likely expecting it to release so early in the year.

At another point during the call, Take-Two said that sales of the game have exceeded expectations. The company didn’t share precise sales numbers, with Zelnick saying it’s still too early to do that, but it seems that even at this early stage, we can count The Outer Worlds as a success for Obsidian and Take-Two.

We still haven’t seen anything from the Nintendo Switch version of The Outer Worlds, but if Private Division is looking to have it out before the end of March, we should see some gameplay videos coming down the pipeline. Hopefully we’ll have a better handle on what kind of concessions need to made to get this game running on the Switch soon enough, so stay tuned.
