Have you ever received a WhatsApp message, only to be followed up on a few minutes later with something like, “Hey, I know you’re online, why aren’t you responding?”

You should be able to put a stop to that soon.
According to WABetaInfo, a new WhatsApp beta for Android, version 2.22.16.11, adds the ability to hide your online status. When you open a chat, the online status appears at the top of the window, indicating whether a user is online or, if not, when they were last seen using the app.
Users can now choose whether to show the “last seen” and “online” features to everyone, all contacts, selected contacts, or nobody.

We knew the feature was coming thanks to a report from WABetaInfo earlier this month, but it was only in development for iOS at the time, with no word on when it would be available for Android.
However, now that the feature is visible in a WhatsApp beta, it is almost certain to appear in an official update to the WhatsApp application soon.
