Windows 11 and many new functional requirements for new machines were discovered by Microsoft this week. The overwhelming majority of functions for Windows 11 released this week will work on most machines. You will use your average PC for most of the stuff in the preview and promotional videos for Windows 11. Today we take a look at the list of functions Microsoft calls for “feature-specific requirements for Windows 11” for their “Windows 11 Specifications.” That goes beyond the very least!

Windows 11 feature-specific requirements revealed

Connectivity Requirements

Many of the features in the list of requirements of Microsoft are quite clear. The first is 5G support – alphabetically. A user requires a 5G-capable modem in order to access 5G functions.

You will need a Wi-Fi 6E-capable AP/router if you are looking to connect to Wi-Fi 6E. You will also need new hardware from WLAN IHV and the most recent drivers.

You will need an Xbox live account if you plan to connect with the Xbox application and play games locally or on the cloud. Not all regions of the world have this type of account. In order to use some features of the Xbox app, you may also need an active Xcox Game Pass subscription.

Display Stuff

You will need a monitored system that is able to display HDR if you are going to operate with “Auto HDR” in Windows 11. To work with Snap three-column layouts you need a display of at least 1920 pixels (efficient pixels) or higher.

You need a multi-touch screen or monitor to use any of the touch features in Windows 11. You can’t just touch your display and expect it to function like a touchscreen if you don’t have a touchscreen.

In Windows 11, Windows Projection requires the Windows Driver Model (WDDM) 2.0 display adapter with full support. A Wi-Fi adapter with Wi-Fi direct support is also necessary.

Audio / Video Requirements

You will need a microphone and speaker, connected to your PC or incorporated, if you plan to use Cortana. Cortana is available in Australia, Brazilian, Canadian, Chinese, French, German, Indian, Japanese, Mexican, Spanish, United Kingdom and the USA at the time this article is being published. You will also need to have a microphone and speaker if you want to use Multiple Voice Assistant (MVA).

Intelligent Video Conferencing requires a video camera, speaker and microphone. If you are thinking of using the Spatial Sound with Windows 11 – the app and speakers, you will also need hardware and software which specifically support Spatial Sound.

In order to use “Mute/Unmute from Task Bar,” you will need a video camera, a speaker, and a microphone. You will also have to make sure your app is compatible with the mute/unmute global app. We need to assume that most apps are right outside the gate compatible with this feature – otherwise, it may cause some embarrassing problems.

You will need a video camera, a mic, and at least a speaker if you are using teams on Windows – any version of Windows. In order to use voice typing, you will need a Microphone inside or connected to your PC.

Windows 11 Voice Wake requires a microphone on your PC. Wake on Voice Also will require a machine that supports Modern Standby – but it may also support Modern Standby if you have a PC supporting Windows 11. This isn’t assured, but it probably is.

Next-Gen Sensors

Windows 11 “Presence” means that the sensor is capable of detecting human interactions with the device OR human device distance.

Authentication with two factor can be used in many ways, with only a Wi-Fi phone or Bluetooth. You can just use a PIN code or have a biometric login tech on your PC, including a fingerprint reader.

Windows Hello works with no biometric sensors and instead can use a Microsoft-compatible PIN or portable security key. You need a PC with a fingerprint reader or a camera for near infrarot (IR) imaging if you want to use biometric authentication using Windows Hello.

Storage and Keys

You need a USB flash drive to use BitLocker to Go. To use this feature first, you’ll need Windows Pro (or higher). You will need to work with Windows Pro and above for Client Hyper-V, which also requires a second level translation processor (also known as SLAT).

You’ll also require Directx12 GPU support, with Shadow Model 6.0 support, for your NVMe SSD driver, to store and run games via “Standard NVM Express Controller.” You need a graphics chip that specifically supports this technology when you’re looking for the DirectX 12 Ultime Action – and a game that also makes use of DirectX 12 Ultimate.
