Despite Apple’s efforts to keep things tidy, the Apple App Store contains over 1.8 million apps, so they could forgive you for feeling overwhelmed while trying to find what you need. If you’re looking for a good place to start, Apple’s annual App Store Awards are always a fun way to see if you’re missing out on any cool games or apps that can improve your life.
The Cupertino company announced the winners for 2022 today, with 16 games and apps receiving awards for being innovative, culturally impactful, or simply cool. Apple’s App Store editorial team, which also curates the content that appears on the home page when you tap the App Store icon on your iPhone, iPad, or other Apple device compiled the list.
Award winners will receive a trophy inspired by the App Store’s icon, which will machine Apple claims from 100% recycled aluminum from its own products and personalized with engraving.
BeReal, a social app that puts a new spin on the photo and video sharing, is one of the most intriguing App of the Year winners. You and any friends you connect with have two minutes each day, at different times, to share what’s going on in your life. Because they only shared photos with your close circle of friends, it’s a more intimate approach than Instagram. However, the name is derived from the fact that you must take a photo using the BeReal app within the time limit, so you’re encouraged to share whether you’re having a lazy bad hair day or on an exotic vacation.
GoodNotes 5 is gaining popularity on the iPad because of its extensive Apple Pencil support, as well as being comprehensive note-taking solution. It supports rich multimedia, knowledge mapping using external links, a dynamic cataloging system, and a wealth of templates inspired by real-life notation and manuscript paper, providing far more functionality than something like Apple’s built-in Notes app.
“Apex Legends Mobile,” a free-to-play game, won iPhone Game of the Year. This battle royale shooter gained popularity quickly after EA released it on consoles and PC without warning in early 2019. I dropped you and two other Legends into a “Hunger Games”-style fight to the finish, fending off other teams looking to escape the creeping boundary that grows deadlier with time. “Apex Legends Mobile” includes touch-optimized controls and Legends with unique abilities that are only available in the mobile version.
“Moncage” is a puzzle game with a unique optical illusion that shows vastly different worlds through each side of a cube you’re trapped in. Though they appear very different, these locations are all linked which means you’ll need to examine and manipulate things in all four to collect storytelling photos and, eventually, solve the puzzle.
