Microsoft is revolutionizing the way we control RGB lighting effects on our PC peripherals. With the release of the latest preview build of Windows 11, users can now take advantage of a dedicated Windows Lighting option in the Personalization section of the Settings app. This new feature provides an easier and more convenient way to control RGB lighting effects on connected peripherals, such as keyboards and mice.
For many years, users have relied on third-party RGB customization apps provided by accessory makers to control the lighting effects on their peripherals. However, these apps are often buggy and unreliable. With the latest update to Windows 11, users can now use the Lighting section in the Personalization settings to control the RGB effects on their peripherals.
The Lighting section allows users to pick and choose which accessories they want to control. For example, if a user selects their keyboard, Windows 11 will provide them with control over RGB brightness levels, the type of lighting effect, and the speed of the transition effect loop. Additionally, users can also customize the colors and even match the RGB lighting effects to the Windows 11 system settings. The color code will be picked up automatically, saving users the hassle of having to find and match the hex code themselves.
Not only can users control RGB lighting effects on their usual gaming peripherals, such as keyboards and mice, but Windows 11 also offers the ability to control the RGB effects on other accessories, like headsets. Although the RGB customization feature is not listed in the changelog of Windows 11’s build 25295, Windows Central has provided a Windows Terminal method for users to enable the feature manually, just like enabling an experimental feature in Chrome.

It will likely take a few weeks for the feature to become available in a stable build of Windows 11, as the current pace of testing in the Windows Insider channel will need to be taken into consideration. Overall, the addition of the dedicated Windows Lighting option in the Personalization section of the Settings app is a huge step forward for Windows users and will undoubtedly simplify the process of controlling RGB lighting effects on their peripherals.
