The Link, Insta360’s first dedicated webcam, was unveiled today (Opens in a new window).

Rather than simply producing a webcam capable of competing with the best Logitech or Razer has to offer, Insta360 went above and beyond, including a slew of premium features as well as artificial intelligence.

The Link has a 1/2-inch sensor, which according to Insta360 allows the webcam to capture more detail with a wider dynamic range than other webcams while also outperforming them in low-light conditions. The Logitech Brio, by comparison, has a 1/4-inch sensor.

The Link can handle 720p and 1080p at up to 60fps and 30fps with HDR enabled, but it also supports Ultra HD 4K at 30fps. It has a 34mm equivalent focal length, F1.8 aperture, 4x digital zoom, phase detection autofocus at a distance of 4-inches to infinity, and H.264 and MJPEG video coding formats are supported.

The use of AI benefits the Link on multiple levels. The webcam is mounted on a 3-axis gimbal, allowing AI tracking to track your face and keep it centered at all times. There are also four different view modes to choose from. DeskView Mode automatically adjusts the camera to focus on your tabletop, Whiteboard Mode uses AI and recognition markers (included) to focus on you or a whiteboard with hand gestures, Overhead Mode is for when you want to provide a bird’s-eye view, and Portrait Mode aims for the perfect social media live streaming experience by capturing uncropped 9:16 video.

The gestures mentioned for Whiteboard Mode can be used at any time to enable/disable AI tracking or zoom in/out without using your keyboard or mouse. There is also built-in privacy protection, which causes the lens to point downwards after 10 seconds of inactivity. Insta360 did not overlook audio, opting for dual noise-canceling microphones to reduce background noise and automatic gain control to amplify your voice.

The Link Controller software (for Windows and macOS) included with the camera allows for manual control of webcam settings such as brightness, exposure, and gimbal position, but it’s also fully compatible with Zoom, Skype, Microsoft Teams, and Google Meet software.
