Our immune systems play a major role in our general well-being as humans. The oxford dictionary defined the immune system to be “the organs and processes of the body that provide resistance to infection and toxins. Organs include the thymus, bone marrow, and lymph nodes.”. This means that, without a strong immune system, we are more likely to contract diseases and infections. Not just that, but our bodies may also not be able to fight the diseases or infections we contract.

It is therefore good to ensure that, our immune systems are functioning right at all times. We can boost our immune systems through our diets by regularly eating a variety of nutritious foods rich in minerals and vitamins. Examples of such foods include; citrus fruits and spinach.


Let’s look at 5 foods that can help boost your immune systems

Citrus fruits

Most citrus fruits contain high amounts of vitamin C and I said this vitamin increases the production of white blood cells, which are key to fighting infections in the human body. Examples of these fruits include; grapefruit, oranges, tangerines, lemons, and limes. Note that, the body does not store or produce vitamins. Therefore, it is advised you take it in a recommended amount daily for maximum results. I recommend women and men take 75 mg and 90 mg, respectively.

Red bell peppers

Red bell peppers contain the most amount of vitamin C and since it has proven vitamin C to help boost the immune system, I recommend it to include red bell pepper in your meals. Especially, if you are not a fan of citrus fruits. Red pepper bells are also rich in beta-carotene, which functions as an antioxidant. Antioxidants may help protect your body against health conditions like heart disease, and cognitive disorders like Alzheimer’s disease.


This is an edible green vegetable plant in the cabbage family packed with vitamins such as vitamins A, C, and E, as well as fiber and many other antioxidants. Broccoli’s nutrients are best preserved when steamed or not cooked at all. According to the Mayo Clinic, it helps to normalize bowel movements, lower cholesterol levels, control blood sugar, maintain bowel health, and aid in achieving a healthy weight.

Garlic & Ginger.

Garlic is a must-have for your health, and early civilization recognized its essence in fighting infections. The immune-boosting properties of garlic seem to come from a heavy concentration of sulfur-containing compounds, such as allicin. Ginger is also said to help decrease inflammation. Many people turn to ginger when experiencing a common cold or (and) sore throat.


Turmeric is a bright yellow, bitter spice that is used by many for many purposes. Some people even infuse it into their skincare routines. I have also used turmeric as an anti-inflammatory in treating osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Some have proven trusted research sources that, high concentrations of curcumin, which is present in turmeric, can help decrease exercise-induced muscle damage. According to “Nuun” (Nuun Hydration – Company), research has shown that “turmeric can modulate the activation of T cells, B cells, macrophages, neutrophils, natural killer cells, and dendritic cells, as well as enhance the body’s antibody responses.”
